of my proposal; but feel sure that a small gain could be effected and the undesirability of Senior Masters at Queen's College undertaking this work
be obviated.
(c). The saving effected by (c) can not be calculated; but
Junior Assistant Kasters are now getting promoted at
the end of about 3 years;
(e). By increasing the weekly hours of 11 Assistant Lastera
(allowing for 2 on leave) by 24 hours each, a total increase of nearly 25 hours is obtained. This con- -sidering the reduction in numbers at the College of recent years justifies me in proposing that the Staff be reduced by 1 English Master; in other words that no one be engaged to fill the vacancy created by the promotion of Mr. Ralphs. Here a saving of £300 rising to £480 annually is made.
The following table shows roughly what the Assistant Masters will draw in 1914 under the present arrangement, including their allowances, and what they might draw if they had steady rises on a fixed scale and no other promotion.
The change would be to the advantage of the Masters in 2 ways: (1) they would gain in 1914 by the amount of the red ink figures; (2) their maximum salaries would be £550 and not £480, an increase of about 13%. Whether this is more than equal to what they are giving up, (shewn a e above,) is for the Govern- -ment to consider. Incidentally it may be mentioned that if kr. Morris accepted the conditions as no doubt he would, Government would save lir. Tanner's allowance next year while he is on leave,
anather £90.
